LITERATURE:The Art of Wu Guanzhong, p.155, L & F Art Gallery, Hong Kong, 1987.

Facing such a simple painting as The Door, it would seem a little strange that the painter is among the greatest artists in modern China. But further reading would enable us to appreciate the shocking beauty of this painting. There are three buildings in the painting which are painted by humble black and gray. The most outstanding part of the painting is a rather simple detail, that is, the doorway. Wu Guanzhong depicted the doorway with great patience so that each part of it is presented vividly in front of us. The color, however, is moderate and modest, in spite of the application of pure red and green. Wu Guanzhong owns the amazing talent to create a peaceful painting by splendid colors and simple composition, and to make modern art languages serve his own creation. Almost all of his themes are humble ——simple landscape, portraits of normal persons, humble houses in villages, etc —— while the great personality of the artist sparks here and there on the surfaces of his works. Titled The Door, this painting depicts not only the doorway to a humble house, but also the doorway to the soul of a great artist.
