“When met with true beauty, stunning on the outside and pure from within, you will understand what skipping of a heartbeat feels like.”
Heartbeat
The Fai Dee Ruby Heartbeat Suite speaks volumes about the aura generated by gems of great rarity and beauty showcased by excellent presentation and master craftsmanship. Many years ago, gemstone connoisseurs such as gem merchant Jean-Baptiste Tavernier referred to exceptional specimens as “gems of fine water.” This comparison is not confined to the surface, but to the whole volume of the gem. Like a glass vessel full of water, truly fine gems are typically highly transparent, enlivened by gentle rocking and tilting to produce a dynamic interplay between crystal and light. For the natural rubies contained within this suite this statement could not be more pertinent today as it was when written.
Although the quality of a gemstone does not depend on its origin, some mining areas have gained renown for producing numerous exceptional gemstones, with mere mention of their names creates visions of allure and beauty. In this respect the gem trade is not so different from art, fashion,or other luxury markets, where the name of the artist, brand name,or provenance of the object will have an important influence on its market value.
A Burmese origin is typically considered the finest pedigree for rubies. Record-setting auction prices attest to this sensibility. The rubies contained in the Fai Dee Ruby Heartbeat Suite all hail from this magical and wondrous part of the world. The intensity of their vivid red color—known in the trade as pigeon’s blood—combined with the incredible natural fluorescence common to rubies from Burma give these gems an arresting color sensation. Their captivating beauty,in combination with the elegant setting showcasing them,is a truly fitting subject for detailed documentation within a GIA Monograph.
From an early age James W.Currens had a fascination with design. After earning his Associate of Arts degree,he worked with New York City’s top jewelry manufacturers. During this early phase of his career,he made prototypes and one-of-a-kind pieces, and executed and stylized some of the world’s most important jewelry. Eager to learn as many techniques as he could in order to further himself as a master jeweler,he took jobs to learn traditional approaches and practices.
In 1994 James ventured out on his own to specialize in high-end jewelry, working as a freelance contractor and designer for the elite of the jewelry industry. He has won over 20 prestigious international design awards, and his work can be seen in the stores of Cartier,Tiffany,Bulgari,Van Cleef & Arpels, and Chopard, among others.
In 2009 he joined into collaboration with world-renowned ruby company Fai Dee,with the mission to produce extraordinarily unique and exquisite designs showcasing Burmese rubies and Kashmir sapphires. All the couture pieces are designed and fabricated by James himself. James’ jewels construct and convey a narrative for the gems they feature, and are inspired by their depth of color and distinctive characteristics. The designs he produces for Fai Dee demonstrate his capability to design pieces that capture “practical spirituality for today’s life style.”
