Qiu Xiaofei’s painterly practice has evolved from a thematic consideration of the temporal nature of objects to a formal expression of the consciousness which lies behind these objects, calling into question the aftermath of self-expression and socialist ideologies.
Recurring is a group of painting constructed as an installation in which wood appears repeatedly, becoming a visual thread tying together the artist’s thought process. Within the works,Qiu Xiaofei makes clear time delineations in “memories”,expressed as conscious activity, and attempts to collect the process of conscious thought through paintings that expand beyond their frames. Thus he draws the works from specific and material boundaries to one of indeterminate space, signaling the depth of consciousness and its non-linear relation with artistic practice.
