Miracle Again in Beijing Poly's Evening Sale

¡°RMB 61,712,000¡± ----the most important art piece this spring Song Huizong¡¯s ¡°Rare Birds Painted from Life¡± was hammered after 45 minutes intensive biddings at 0:20 am May 30th.
The two most important evening sales within Beijing Poly 2009 Spring Auctions had become the most shinning auctions in the world this spring. The Chinese artworks evening sale began at 8:00pm on May 29th, lasting for almost 6 hours. More than one thousand people attended and participated. 127 art pieces were sold for total turnover of RMB 0.364 billion yuan, with hammer rate of over 90%. Of that, ¡°Chinese Artworks Evening Sale¡± only was sold for RMB 0.288 billion yuan, and ¡°Imperial Art from Yuan, Ming, Qing dynasties (Chinese ceramics and works of art evening sale)¡± was sold for RMB 76.7 million yuan.
The first part of Chinese Artwork Evening Sale, Chinese Modern and Contemporary Art, sold for RMB 0.1 billion yuan with 100% hammer rate. The three art pieces from Mr. and Mrs. Ullens collection earned great attention and performed well. Chen Yifei¡¯s ¡°Thinking of History at my space¡± sold for RMB 40,432,000 yuan, Zhang Xiaogang¡¯s ¡°Bloodline Series¡± sold for RMB 16,800,000 yuan, and Liu Xiaodong¡¯s ¡°Showered in sunlight¡± sold for 6,832,000 yuan. Besides, Zeng Fanzhi¡¯s ¡°Mask 2001¡± sold for RMB 8,064,000 yuan, Wang Yidong¡¯s ¡°Beautiful Village¡± sold for RMB 4,704,000 yuan. The great performance of such brilliant art pieces have approved that the Chinese modern and contemporary art trade center has successfully moved to Beijing.
The second part of Chinese Artworks Evening Sale was Chinese paintings and calligraphies. Mr. and Mrs. Ullens consigned 18 art pieces to Beijing Poly 2009 Spring Auctions, besides three oil paintings, the rest of them were organized to a special session named ¡°The important Chinese paintings collection from Mr. and Mrs. Ullens¡±. All paintings were successfully sold with total turnover of RMB 106 million yuan. Song Huizong¡¯s ¡°rare birds painted from life¡± was undoubtly the most splendid piece in whole auctions. Bidding starting from RMB 38,000,000 yuan, after 45 minutes biddings, the owner of paddle number 572 successfully won the piece with RMB 61,712,000 yuan. This domestic collector also won Yu Feian¡¯s ¡°imitation of Song Huizong¡¯s rare birds painted from life¡± with RMB 3,136,000 yuan. Beside this piece, other paintings also had great performances, such as Lan Ying¡¯s ¡°landscape in the manner of Dachi¡± sold for RMB 5,768,000 yuan, Dong Qichang¡¯s ¡°landscape in style of Juran¡± sold for RMB 4,592,000 yuan, Hong Li¡¯s ¡°narcissus¡± sold for RMB 4,592,000 yuan, Qi Baishi¡¯s ¡°Li Tieguai¡± sold for RMB 3,920,000 yuan, Jin Nong¡¯s ¡°drunken Zhong Kui¡± sold for RMB 3,808,000 yuan, and so on.
Next session was ¡°calligraphies written by eight emperors in Qing dynasty¡±, which were 100% sold for RMB 24,897,600 yuan. This session contained 15 calligraphies written by Emperor Shun Zhi, Emperor Kang Xi, Emperor Yong Zheng, Emperor Qian Long, Emperor Dao Guang, Emperor Xian Feng, Emperor Guang Xu, and Emperor Xuan Tong from Qing dynasty. All calligraphies were collected by the famous Chinese Relics Museum ¡°Fujii Saiseikai Yurinkan Museum of Art¡± in Japan. All calligraphies except Emperor Qian Long¡¯s ¡°three large characters Ming Lv Xuan¡± were published in ¡°a catalogue of writings and paintings by the Chinese emperors, empreese and princes dating from the Tang to the end of the Ch¡¯ing dynasty¡± in 1919. The Emperor Kang Xi¡¯s ¡°three large characters Qing Shen Qin or be honest, careful, and diligent¡± was sold for RMB 6,552,000 yuan, 5 times of the highest estimate. The rest of calligraphies were sold for two to three times of estimates.
The great performances of ¡°The important Chinese paintings collection from Mr. and Mrs. Ullens¡± and ¡°calligraphies written by eight emperors in Qing dynasty¡± are the approval of the strength of Poly Auction in classical paintings and calligraphies category.
The last but not least part is Chinese modern paintings and calligraphies. Works by Xu Beihong maintained great and stable performance within Beijing Poly¡¯s auctions. ¡°Song of spring¡±, which was exhibited in ¡°the song of spring---works by Xu Beihong exhibition¡± at Poly Art Museum last March, was sold for RMB 10,136,000 yuan. For celebrating the 110th birthday of Zhang Daqian, we launched several pieces by Zhang Daqian in the evening sale, such as ¡°maiden in Dun Huang¡± sold for RMB 2,650,000 yuan, and ¡°landscape in snow¡± sold for RMB 5,900,000 yuan. In addition, Beijing Poly also organized a session named ¡°new China art auction¡±. Four paintings in this session were 100% hammered, such as Bai Xueshi¡¯s ¡°landscape¡± sold for RMB 1,100,000 yuan, and Song Wenzhi¡¯s ¡°new look of mountains¡± sold for RMB 1,300,000 yuan.
Imperial Art from Yuan, Ming, Qing dynasties (Chinese ceramics and works of art evening sale) began at 0:30am on May 30th. Although it had been late night, the auction venue was still crowded. Forty fine art pieces were sold for RMB 76,698,000 yuan.
As the most important auction, Poly¡¯s evening sale has successfully been held for two years. Many new records were come from our evening sales, which has become one of the most representative auctions in the worldwide Chinese art auction industry. The great result of these evening sales also implied the spring of art market coming back.
