Di Zhu Ming, Rewrote a Record of 436.8 Million in Chinese Works of Art Auction

11:15 P.M. June 3, 2010 was marked with a hammer sound, signaling a close of hot biddings after nearly 40 minutes paddles race. Hundreds of collectors witnessed this moment and extended overwhelming applauses. Di Zhu Ming by Huang Tingjian was purchased at 436.8 million RMB, bettering a record of 169 million created at Poly Auction last year and far exceeding Yuan Dynasty Blue and White Jar¡ªGui Gu Xia Shan which was transacted at 230 million RMB in London auction five years ago. Thanks to 17 years of domestic auction development, China greeted and hugged in the first world record of Chinese works of art in auction.

 

Huang Tingjian, a calligrapher, is widely-recognized as one of the famous ¡°Four calligrapher masters in Song Dynasty¡±.  This piece of work is 8.24 meters long with 600 Chinese characters. The total length is as long as 15 meters if inscriptions are all included. It is the longest existing large running-regular script by Huang Tingjian. Mr.Fu Shen, a Taiwan professional on calligraphy study, composes a thesis on it titled FROM DOUBT TO CONFIRMATION¡ªA STUDY ON DI ZHU MING BY HUANG TING JIAN, putting forward that this piece of work represents a transition for Huang Tingjian calligraphy style in his running-regular script. In the hand scroll of this calligraphy, famous collectors¡¯ seals by Wang Houzhi and Jia Sidao in Song dynasty, Xiang Yuanbian in Ming dynasty are found. The oldest comments on it was dated less than 50 years after Huang Tingjian pass away, evidence of authentic handwriting by Huang Tingjian, making rare calligraphy works in Nan Song dynasty numbered with 5. The content in this calligraphy is DI ZHU MING by Wei Zheng of Tang dynasty, which was intended to encourage youth. This work represents a combination of Huang Tingjian¡¯s morale and his calligraphy artistry, thus labeled with meaningfulness in Chinese history of calligraphy, artistry and culture.
