Beijing Poly 5th Anniversary Spring Auction Scored 3.3 billion RMB

From June 1st to June 5th,2010, Beijing Poly 5th anniversary spring auction came to curtail call after five days of bidding race fetching 3.3 billion RMB of transaction, setting a world record of Chinese works of art in spring auction. Ancient calligraphy & paintings, modern Chinese painting and calligraphy, fine Chinese ceramics and works of art, modern and contemporary Chinese art all witnessed record-high lots. Ding Zhu Ming of Huang Tingjian calligraphy became central stage with 436.8 million RMB purchased. Top three in this season auction are all above hundreds of million RMB. 50 pieces of lots hiked tens of million RMB. Hundreds of works of art transacted above five million RMB prices. Those with million prices transaction are innumerable. Beijing Poly presents herself as well as Poly Culture Group a nice gift with the record-high auction, sending a satisfying result to the collectors who have contributed to Poly for five years. 11:15 P.M. June 3, 2010 was marked with a hammer sound, signaling a close of hot biddings after nearly 40 minutes paddles race. Hundreds of collectors witnessed this moment and extended overwhelming applauses. Di Zhu Ming by Huang Tingjian was purchased at 436.8 million RMB, bettering a record of 169 million created at Poly Auction last year and far exceeding Yuan Dynasty Blue and White Jar¡ªGui Gu Xia Shan which was transacted at 230 million RMB in London auction five years ago. Thanks to 17 years of domestic auction development, China greeted and hugged in the first world record of Chinese works of art in auction. Classical Chinese paintings and calligraphy are of top grades and part of them are warmly responded, totally 1.36 billion RMB. Besides Di Zhu Ming, another two were purchased at the prices above hundreds of million as evidenced by Wang Meng LANDSCAPE with 136.64 million. Yan Dang Mountain mentioned in Shi Qu Bao Ji was transacted at 129.92 million RMB. 16 pieces of lots were transacted above tens of million RMB, i.e. AUTUMN HUNTING at 67.2 million RMB, Xia Chang¡¯s STORM OVER THE XIANG RIVER at 59.36 million. Wang Mian¡¯s BOUGH IN FULL BLOOM at 57.12 million. Chen Hongshou¡¯s FIGURES at 39.2 million, Zhou Chen¡¯s WATCHING THE TIDE at 38.08 million, Kang Xi calligraphy DU ZHI JING XUE at 33.6 million. Shi Tao¡¯s TRIBE HUNT at 32.48 million, Yong Zheng¡¯s CALLIGRAPHY AND PAINTING at 20.16 million, Du Jin¡¯s ROMANTIC GARDEN at 18.48 million RMB. Liu Song Nian¡¯s FISHING IN SNOW RIVER at 17.92 million, Xu Wei¡¯s CALLIGRAPHY at 16.8 million, Hua Yan¡¯s PINE AND CRANES at 15.68 million, Cui Zizhong¡¯s WASHING ELEPHANT at 12.32 million, Shi Tao¡¯s FLOWER at 11.76 million, LANDSCAPE IN STYLE OF NI YUNLIN at 10.976 million. Wen Zhengming¡¯s LANDSCAPE at 10.08 million. Important Chinese paintings and calligraphy from GUY and MYRIAM ULLENS collection applauded with 100% transaction rate. What is noted, powerful buyers popped up in large numbers, DI ZHU MING attracted a initial bid of 80 million RMB, after price scaling with 10 million RMB, there are seven or eight collectors participating in the bidding. When it reached 350 million RMB, still 3 bidders remained. There dotted buyers for lots with prices above tens of million, which shows vigor and vitality of classical Chinese paintings and calligraphies. His A PAIR OF HOUSES and BAMBOO AND COCKROO were also sold above 15 million RMB. Qi Baishi¡¯s VARIOUS SUBJECTS was purchased at 33.6 million. The estimate of ALBUM OF FLOWERS AND INSECT ranged from 2 million to 4 million and was transacted at 14.56 million RMB. His Four Screens hit 7.168 million RMB. Qi Baishi¡¯ HAPPY NEW YEAR hit 11.76 million RMB. Fu Baoshi¡¯s SCHOLARS was transacted at 17.92 million. THE MAJESTIC LANDSCAPE OF CHINA was transacted at 13.44 million RMB. LADY HOLDING THE PEACH BLOSSOMS was transacted at 9.184 million. Zhang Daqian¡¯s VARIOUS SUBJECTS was transacted at the price of 42.56 million, ten times of initial estimate. THE PICTURE OF XIYUAN GATHERING was transacted at 19.6 million. HERMIT was transacted at 12.88 million. LOTUS (hehuashoujuan), HERMIT BY THE PINE and LOTUS (qifenggaojie)were all above 8 million RMB. Li Keran¡¯s WATERFALL and Mountain JINGGANGSHAN were transacted at 10.528 million and 13.44 million respectively. Xie Zhiliu¡¯s THE MAJESTIC LANDSCAPE OF CHINA and Huang Zhou¡¯s PORTRAIT OF UNCLE KUERBAN were transacted at 45.92 million and 16.80 million respectively. Wu Guanzhong¡¯s only album 12 SCENES AND NOTES was transacted at 35.84 million RMB. Lu Yanshao¡¯s ALBUM OF LANDSCAPE was transacted at 5.152 million, nearly five times of initial estimate price. Fine Chinese ceramics and works of art created a best record of 580 million RMB turnover. Imperial works of art focus on Qianlong¡¯s seal, inkstone, and scroll. A VERY FINE IMPERIAL WHITE JADE ¡°ZI QIANG BU XI¡± SEAL is of great meaning and encouragement, which once listed in many categories. It has been collected by Guimet Family in France and was transacted at laureate price of 56.56 million RMB. AN EXTREMELY RARE ¡°QIANLONG¡¯S IMPERIAL USE¡± CHENGNI INKSTONE WITH ZITAN BOX was transacted at 14 million RMB, breaking the world record of inkstone auction; AN EXTREMELY RARE IMPERIAL CLOISONNE ENAMEL SCROLL BOX WITH THREE MINIATURE SCROLLS is an only piece in auction and was transacted at 11.2 million. Imperial ceramics have constant and increasing trend i.e. AN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE AND RARE BLUE AND WHITE VASE, MEIPING at 35.84 million RMB. AN EXTREMELY RARE GREEN-GROUND FAMILLE ROSE TWO HANDLED VASE with 19.04 million, AN UNUSUAL GARLIC-HEAD UNDERGLAZE with 16.8 million RMB. FINE CHINESE CERAMICS OF THE MING AND QING DYNASTIES FROM JAPANESE AND OVERSEAS COLLECTIONS have a total of 60 pieces of lots and all were transacted with reasonable prices. Rhinoceros horn products are market highlights this year. AN EXQUISITELY CARVED RHINOCEROS HORN ¡°YING XIONG¡± LIBATION CUP was transacted at 7.168 million Modern and contemporary Chinese art came to a turnover of 350 million RMB. Evening sale I was featured by classical and realism styles with good performance. THE DUET by Chen Yifei started from 24 million RMB for auction and finally ended up with 41 million RMB in transaction after fierce biddings, reaching 45.92 million RMB in final turnover price. Wu Guanzhong¡¯s GRAND CANYON IN AMERICA, MOUNT KILIMANJARO, and AUTUMN SCENCE were all successfully transacted by tens of millions. Li Guijun¡¯s works of art were extremely favored by many collectors. Modern and contemporary Chinese art evening sale II featuring on modern art was accomplished with 85% of transaction rate. Liu Ye¡¯s LITTLE SAILORMAN was the best sale, standing at 13.44 million of purchase on that evening, hitting triple of an estimate.
