For the Chinese scholars, ¡°Shu Zhai¡± (the Chinese word for study) brings a complex feeling: before they pass the imperial examination, they study there day and night; after they enter the government, ¡°Shu Zhai¡± is their reserved Eternal Land where they escape from the government affairs; as they retire for the government and start their own business or turn into artists, ¡°Shu Zhai¡± becomes their private kingdom where they are the happiest and the truest. Choosing a name for their ¡°Shu Zhai¡± is an interesting procedure which demands great intellect. There are a great range of choices in Chinese for the word ¡°study¡± such as ¡°Zhai¡±, ¡°Tang¡±, ¡°Guan¡±, ¡°Ge¡±, ¡°Lu¡±, ¡°Xuan¡±, ¡°Shi¡± etc. The word ¡°Jing She ¡± (luxury residences) is often chosen used by the scholars or artists who consider themselves as devout Buddhists, such as ¡°Moye Jingshe¡± of Chang Dai Chien and the ¡°An Chi Jingshe¡± of Chen Jia etc. Huai Su once wrote in the "Autobiography" that ¡°Going wild I look down on the world; Being Drunk I get the truth.¡± The owner of the study ¡°Zhenru Jingshe¡± chose the words of a drunken monk to name the quiet study of a Buddhist: the contrast shows an excellent sense of humor.
Zhenru Jingshe is located in the South of China beside the River Xiangjiang. Its owner is a famous industrialist in Hongkong whose hobby is the collection of artistic works. His collection includes the paintings of Lingnan School of Painting and the modern and contemporary painters such as Huang Zhou, Li Keran, Fan Zeng etc. His collection of the Lingnan School of Painting contains Gao Jianfu, his student Zhao Shao¡¯ang, Guan Shanyue, Yang Shanshen and Lin Yong, that connects the different generations Lingnan School of Painting. Perhaps the collection of Zhenru Jinshe is not that impressive in its quantity, but it is the proof of its owner¡¯s support to and friendship with the artists of the Lingnan School of Painting, which shows the true spirit of collection.
