Leng Jun was born in Si Chuan in early 60s, and was educated in Wu Han, the capital of Hu Bei province, where he has spent a lot of years. He is the vice-director of Wu Han Painting Academy now and is an important painter in contemporary China. Leng Jun is well-known for his perfect painting skills and is very good at express his own feelings toward modern society by realistic oil paintings. What¡¯s more, he makes use of duplicators in his paintings, which could make his painting even more ¡®realistic¡¯ than black-white photos. The new skill has gained his wide-spreading fames and also left him exposed to tides of critique.
Late in 90s, he has created a series of paintings, all of which are titled Landscape of Our Century. He wants to express his own opinions toward the contemporary society by these paintings. The Landscape of Our Century, I is the first one of this series. This painting is made of crushed metals and an iron wire mesh, which are shaped as a world map. Leng Jun make use of these material to symbolize the cruelty, the isolation, and the lack of freedom of our time. While the skills of communication develop rapidly, people are becoming lonelier and lonelier. No one could trust his neighbors easily nowadays. The human relationships in traditional society are generally tender and warm, while they are becoming colder and colder in our century. Lacking of sense of security, people have to defend themselves at the victim of others. People have to defend themselves with iron wire meshes, which in return would make them controlled. There is little hope for them to escape from this vicious circle.
Leng Jun said: ¡°I would do whatever I could for the sake of art.¡± He did. He has strangely combined traditional painting skills with duplicators. When he makes use of this newly developed art language to express his opinions toward modern society, he has exposed himself to the critiques of both sides of traditional painters and avant-garde artists. Nevertheless, his art works have been accepted by more and more audience, professional or non-professional. His Landscape of Our Century series has questioned our world sharply. We are compelled to think of this world and ourselves and to face up to the absurdity of our lives.
