Zhao Banli is well-known for his ¡°Panda¡± series, which takes important social problems in modern China as topics. While most of his audiences recognize him as a sharp observer of the society and an avant-garde artist, Zhao Bandi¡¯s brilliant skills of oil painting remain largely unknown. The H-Gold, a wonderful oil painting by Zhao Bandi, exhibits to us his perfect skills. It is clear that the H-Gold has borrowed something from Impressionist paintings. It is a sunny summer day. A girl is drinking tea in an outdoor restaurant in a mountain. Next to her is an aged couple, who are chatting intimately. It seems that the girl is attracted by their chat and is listening to them stealthily. Around them are some by-passers, who are appreciating the beautiful scene of the summer day in the mountain. The composition of the painting is loose and open, so that it looks like a snap-shot, which is a feature of Impressionist paintings. The theme, the colors, and the brush strokes applied to the painting are also typical for Impressionist paintings. As a sharp observer and outstanding artist, Zhao Bandi has grasped the features of the girl and the old couple delicately. We could encounter with such a couple and such a girl everyday, but no one would notice them. The curiosity of the girl and the gossip of the old couple reveal to us an interesting aspect of human nature. We might have been attracted by someone¡¯s gossip, or we might have been gossipy ourselves some times. These are trivial details in our lives. They are trivial, but they are interesting. They could only be observed by a sharp artist like Zhao Bandi.
