Consisting of more than 150 lots up for bidding, 11 lots were sold for more than RMB 10 million each. Overall, sales of the two spring sales together reached a near total of RMB 350 million.
Wu Guanzhong¡¯s New Bamboos Alongside the Li River was hammered at an impressive price. With its low estimate at RMB 22 million, the painting was last sold for RMB 64.5 million; in addition of the buyer¡¯s premium, the lot closed at RMB 74.175 million, becoming the highest achieved amongst the Modern and Contemporary auctions this season.
Poly Auction¡¯s Modern and Contemporary Arts Evening Sale this season was a compilation of Wu Guanzhong¡¯s works spanning from the 1960s to the last 30 years of the 20th century; presenting four to five pieces of his best works from each period. Sales for most of Wu¡¯s lots were higher than its low estimate; Wu secured three places in the top ten spring sales auction results, reflecting his consistent influence within the strong art market. Monument to the People¡¯s Heroes by Liu Kaiqu was sold for RMB 31.05 million, placed second, after Wu Guanzhong¡¯s New Bamboos Alongside the Li River. 16.9.91 by Zao Wou-Ki, a work that expresses his profound spiritual perspective of the cosmos, was placed third, hammered at RMB 25.3 million.
