Fang Lijun is the representative of ¡°Cynical Realism¡± and an outstanding figure in contemporary Chinese art. He is famous for his ¡°the Bald¡± which has become the symbol of his art and of the empty soul of Chinese people in the contemporary society. Compared with most of his paintings, the Fairy Scattering Flowers seems surprisingly beautiful. The protagonists of the painting are bald men too, but the upper part of the painting depicts a hand of a fairy, which is scattering flowers. As is well-known, ¡°Fairy scattering flowers¡± is the symbol of happiness in Chinese fairy tales. The hand of the fairy, however, is as fat and ugly as the bald men in the lower part of the painting, which makes the situation rather cynical: it seems that the stupid bald men are expecting ¡°flowers¡± of happiness from an equally stupid ¡°fairy¡±. There is no hope for them in this world while they are blind to this fact. The situation is cruel and there is nowhere that we could escape from it. Fang Lijun does not ever attempt to give us a solution for the problem. What he does is to reveal the situation so that the blind soul could be awakened.
