Zhang Lei does not confine herself to the fine details of certain themes, rather she diffuses her unique inner feelings into records of personal experience. She sometimes draws her current living environment; sometimes describes her childhood experience and memory from an adult perspective; and sometimes deals with solemn political events as games. In most of her works, the figures represent the artist herself and point to a keen desire to express what the artist is experiencing in her own life, for example UNTITLED, as if she is telling each of us her stories and actions in a stream of consciousness manner via the painting tableau. In this way, she attempts to generate an immediate reaction and thereby pull the viewer into the life and games depicted and created by her.
