As an outstanding young artist, Huang Yishan always focuses on 'spatial structure', 'narrative logic' and 'material speculation' in his creation. The space and the sense of drama are always the intuitive and profound impression that Huang Yishan's works convey to the viewer. By means of collage, misappropriation, juxtaposition, distortion, deformation, transformation and texture treatment, he constructed a well-designed structure and framework to amplify the tension and conflict between the state of daily life and people's psychological desire and spiritual world. Thus, various images merged into his 'pen' in a new narrative context, thus forming a 'picture in picture' visual effect.
As a typical masterpiece of the 'picture in picture' series, the Self portrait of Picasso (Lot 1082) created in 2019 can be regarded as a perfect example of Huang Yishan's unique creative method. This work constructs a meaningful image space in its symbolic form of 'picture in picture', which can be seen as a further extension of the artist's creative concept of increasingly emphasizing the materiality and spatial nature of the picture in recent years. In the Self portrait of Picasso (Lot 1082), Huang Yishan, based on a portrait of Picasso, helped Picasso complete a nonexistent self portrait by imitating the painting language of Picasso's Cubism. The so-called self portrait and the structural relationship outside the painting have a standard Huang Yishan style spatial layout, thus forming a cross space-time dialogue on art history.
